The Privacy Commission supports the choice of the Belgian legislator to reduce the age for parental consent to 13 years under Article 7 of the Act of 30 July 2018 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data. This age is more in line with the daily practice where many young people go online from an early age. We can not deprive them of opportunities to develop digitally. But because children also need to be aware of their privacy, the choice for 13 years must be accompanied by extra efforts to teach children from an early age on media literacy.
